BusyPayroll, powered by Gusto, supports printing on the following type of check stock—both will include the employee’s pay stub.
Bottom (blank check stock)
The physical check will always be on the bottom of the check PDF.
Use this check stock if you have blank check stock and need Gusto to populate your company and bank info.
Important: You will not be able to use this check type if you verified your bank account using Instant Bank Verification (Plaid) during your initial BusyPayroll onboarding, as account numbers are encrypted and will not print on this type of check.
Instead, please use 'Top (Gusto check stock)' or, only if time permits, manually verify your bank account.
However, please note that manual re-verification is not recommended unless done at least five business days prior to the payroll for which you intend to print checks, due to the processing time required for verification. However, please note that manual re-verification is not recommended unless done at least five business days prior to the payroll for which you intend to print checks, due to the processing time required for verification.
Check numbers are populated by Gusto
Gusto assigns check numbers each time 'Print Checks' is clicked. The first download will start with check number ‘0001’, and each subsequent download will continue numbering from the last check.
For example, if the first download has checks numbered 0001–0004, the second download will have checks numbered 0005–0008. This ensures that each check has a unique number.
Top (Gusto check stock)
The physical check will always be on the top of the check PDF. The pay stub will appear at the bottom.
Use this check printing option if you have check stock that is pre-printed with your company and bank info.
Check numbers should already be pre-printed on the customized check stock that was purchased. (You can find instructions for purchasing Gusto's check stock at the bottom of this article.)
Additional Notes:
Avoid printing issues: To avoid printing issues, unselect the option for "Fit to Page" or "Scale to Page" if it’s selected by default.
Post-Dating and Backdating Policy: System-generated checks are always post-dated by 48 business hours, including those from off-cycle payrolls. While you can post-date the payment date, backdating is not allowed.
Same-Day or Next-Day Payment Process: If you need to pay an employee on the same day or the next day, set their payment method to check. However, instead of printing the system-generated PDF check, you must handwrite a check for the net amount, which can be found on the pay stub in busybusy, or the Payroll Summary and/or Payroll Journal report in Gusto.
