We’ve all had that sinking feeling when you go to check your hours for the pay period, only to find that things aren’t adding up! It can be difficult or confusing to add several combinations of hours and minutes together, but this article will help explain the difference between adding time in the HH:MM format versus adding time as you would in the decimal format, as well as where you can find your time card!

Finding your Time Card (Mobile)

  1. With the busybusy app open, tap on the 3 stacked lines in the top left corner to open your navigation menu, then make sure you are in the Dashboard tab. Typically, this will open up your clock-in screen, displaying your timer. However, there are other tabs along the bottom that you may be in, that you can use to view your Schedule, Time Card, and any reports that you have permission to view! Go ahead and tap on Time Cards.

  2. Whether your company’s pay period is weekly, bi-weekly, or semimonthly, the pay period view along the top row will give you the accurate date range that you need to verify your check! Tap on Pay Period to bring up your current time card.

  3. You will most likely be needing to look at the previous pay period if you are checking your time card for a paycheck you just received, or will be receiving next, so use the arrows up at the top of the screen to make sure you are viewing the correct Time Card.

  4. Once you have navigated through and found the Time Card you need, you can tap on a day to bring up all of your entries for that day. You can review each entry and check the descriptions for notes that could’ve been left by your Admin or Supervisor about edits they made, or (for Android users) use the pencil icon to add your own notes in order to mark which entries specifically look wrong. (For iOS users) Tap on the entry, tap on edit in the top right corner, and then it will allow you to edit the description to add a note! Every company is different, so check with your Admin/Employer to make sure that they are okay with you using the notes for this purpose.

    • If your position currently has access to edit your own time, you can tap the pencil icon next to an entry to correct an incorrect start or end time.

Adding Hours

Adding hours and time together can be a little misleading. Our first instinct is to just begin adding, which can lead to some really wacky numbers! Here’s a table showing 1 - 10 minutes in the HH:MM format vs the Decimal format. Already you can see how the numbers can get skewed if added incorrectly.

Adding the HH:MM Format

If you decide to add the HH:MM format manually, you can add the hours together, then add the minutes together. Because there are only 60 minutes in an hour, you cannot have a time whose minute value is greater than 60. In this case, subtract 60 minutes and add 1 more to the hour.

For example:

1:40 + 2:50 = 3:90 - 0:60 (carry the 60 minutes over to the hour) = 4:30

Note: You can find lots of different time calculators online to make things quick and easy. Here is one website I use when I need to add time: https://www.calculatehours.com/Time_Calculator.htm

Adding the Decimal Format

Luckily, adding hours displayed in the Decimal format is as easy as just adding!

For example:

1.45 + 2.81 = 5.26

If you have verified that your time card is correct, we recommend signing it! Know that once your time card has been signed, you’ll be notified if any edits are made and be prompted to re-sign. If you’ve added things up again and your time card still seems incorrect, please reach out to your Admin or Employer!
